Maeve was dancing when she thought she saw Bella. Her partner spun her from her vantage point just as she was trying to get a good look.

“Drat!” she muttered.

“Pardon me?” her dance partner queried.

“Nothing,” Maeve replied as she plastered a fake smile on her face.

Martha was having the same problem as her partner did not allow her to get so much as a decent glimpse of Bella. But she was sure it was her stepsister. How did she get here and looking so darn beautiful to boot? Martha saw Cole approach Bella at the bar and could have screamed in frustration. She pushed her partner away from her and left him standing in the middle of the dance floor. He stared after her in shock.

Cole stood close to Bella and whispered in her ear.

“I’m glad you are here,” he said softly.

Bella spun around to see who spoke. She stared at him in anger.

“What are you doing here?” Bella demanded.

“Trying to enjoy this party,” he remarked.

“Enjoy it somewhere else,” she said curtly.

“I find my present company to my liking,” he quipped.

“I do not,” she turned to move away from him. He grasped her arm lightly.

“Don’t go. Let me explain,” he pleaded. “Please, Bella.”

“I already know your reason for leaving me hanging. No need to put it into words,” Bella said angrily.

“If you think I intentionally blew you off then you are wrong,” he said. “I would never do that. I saw you running out of the plaza. I called out to you but you didn’t hear me.”

“A likely story,” she snapped.

“You had on blue jeans and a yellow hoodie. You dropped a cherry snow cone as you ran,” he said.

His description of her clothes and the snow cone was right on the money. Maybe she had misjudged him. Uncertainty reflected in her eyes. His hand slipped behind her neck as he cupped her face.

“I would never hurt you like that, Bella. I got tied up with my father who wouldn’t stop talking about this darn party,” he explained. “I finally was able to leave and in rushing out I forgot my cell; so I could not call you. When I saw you running I knew you were angry and hurt. I’m sorry, Bella. Please forgive me.”

Bella saw the honesty in his clear blue eyes. She could not remain irate with him no matter how hard she tried; and she didn’t want to try any more.

“I forgive you, Cole,” she said.

“Really?’ he asked hesitantly.

“Really,” she smiled.

He pulled her to him and hugged her tightly. Bella returned his hug then pulled back. She looked at him in confusion.

“You mentioned your father was talking about this party. Who is your father?’ Bella asked.

Cole shrugged.

“Theodore Halbrook Monroe,” Cole said casually.

“Lord Theodore Halbrook Monroe?” Bella asked in clarification.

“Yes. His title is decorative at best here in America but he sometimes uses it to impress,” Cole sighed.

“I never would have connected him to you,” Bella said in awe.

“I was counting on that,” he said.

“You were?”

He nodded.

“I suspected
